The problem lies with the young girl herself. The first time we meet this character, Sehmat, she runs onto the middle of the road to rescue an imperilled squirrel - cute-meat if not a meet-cute - and the film's pitch changes immediately. Her father, normally restrained, starts speaking to her with overt exposition, suddenly parroting manipulative lines like a male Farida Jalal. "You know I work for the intelligence bureau," he tells his daughter, for some reason. ("War? Phir se?" is her line right after). Raazi was meant to be a realistic thriller but, thanks to Sehmat, it keeps spiralling towards cinematic melodrama.

The film switches track every time Alia Bhatt, who plays Sehmat, appears on screen. Bhatt is an incendiary talent, but Raazi exposes how she overplays her hand. She is never bad here, but frequently does far more than needed, emoting for visibility rather than feeling. It is the kind of performance that may easily be mistaken for an impressive one - we do often treasure 'Most Acting' over 'Best Acting,' after all - but she is out of her depth, particularly because Gulzar surrounds the A-lister with a remarkably authentic ensemble. So we have a few solid beats, with officious gents opening files and discussing submarines, and then we have Sehmat, who suffixes every narrow escape with a hyperventilating shudder and moist-eyed shock - an indiscreet reaction that would be sure to raise an eyebrow. Bhatt has cornered the market on histrionics (and, indeed, hysterics) in this film.

The project was locked last month after the three actors gave their dates. It will be shot in a start-to-finish schedule between December 2018 and February 2019 and will release in the second half of next year," a source close to the development told the publication

Inder Kumar will be in the director's chair for the film, tentatively titled Hera Pheri 3. He took to Twitter to confirm the news and wrote, "This is going to be a fun project with a stellar star cast 1.akshaykumar  2.SunielVShetty 3.SirPareshRawal. Looking forward to *HeraPheri3'

Hera Pheri 3 was supposed to be helmed by Neeraj Vora, who had directed the second installment of the franchise, Phir Hera Pheri. In fact, pre-production had begun in 2016, but the film came to a standstill when Neeraj slipped into a coma in October that year

Which is why, the news of a third Hera Pheri movie makes me cringe in expected disappointment, rather than smile with expected humor.

As the actor, who is on the cusp of superstardom in Malayalam, makes his entry into Hindi, he stands to achieve a feat even his father Mammootty was unable to do: star in a successful mainstream Hindi film. But Dulquer, who turns 32 on July 28, does not look at films as stepping stones to consolidate nationwide stardom. If he had, he would have chosen to do the many Hindi scripts that came his way before this. To him, it is about doing his bit to become a part of good cinema. Dulquer says the decision to say yes to Karwaan was an easy one to make. “You don’t doubt the credentials of a director who has already convinced Irrfan Khan,” he laughs.

How did Bollywood train its lens on him? Khurana says that he was not looking for anyone from any particular region; just “a good actor and a good person”. “I could see his acting range when I watched his films Charlie and Ustad Hotel,” says the director. “In Karwaan, there are scenes where you can spot him hitting the right notes even without using words. It isn’t an easy part to play because he needs to counter Irrfan’s quirkiness with expressive subtlety. He also needs to match an actor of Irrfan’s stature. That’s what has translated to their wonderful chemistry in the film.”
